Google On Algorithm & Ranking Updates This Week: We're Always Improving Our Search Results

Starting around Tuesday of this week, we noticed Google algorithm and ranking shifts throughout the SEO industry and search results. There were significant chatter and the algorithm watching tools all, all of them, were responding heavily to the changes. The truth is, the chatter and ranking shuffles have continued on through today and SEOs and webmasters are still pretty concerned and on their toes around watching these changes. Some have not noticed any change, of course. But others either saw improvements or losses in their rankings (yea, duh). If you have not checked your rankings and Google organic traffic yet for you and/or your clients, do so.John Mueller of Google gave his typical comment on these changes on Twitter this morning saying "we're always working on improving our search results, so seeing things in other tools is kinda expected."We're always working on …

Google Does Not Support TravelAction Schema, Yet

The TravelAction schema is designed markup for to markup your HTML to show the "act of traveling from an fromLocation to a destination by a specified mode of transport, optionally with participants." But this is not yet supported in search, it is for Gmail markup but not for web search.John Mueller said on Twitter that it is not supported:AFAIK we don't use that in search. cc @danbri — John â.o(â§â-½â¦)o.â (@JohnMu) September 22, 2017He added later, "as we see more markup being used well, we might start using/showing it."Yes, lots and lots of steakholders. "It's complicated." :-). Also, as we see more markup being used well, we might start using/showing it. — John â.o(â§â-½â¦)o.â (@JohnMu) September 22, 2017So use it if you want, where it makes sense, but Google is not doing anything with it right now in web search.Forum discussion at Twitter.

Google Call Only Ads Now Support Ad Extensions

Google Call Only Ads Now Support Ad Extensions

While I was offline last week, Google AdWords announced that call-only ads now support new ad extensions. Google wrote "for the first time, youâll be able to show ad extensions with call-only ads to promote more relevant information about your products and services, and give people more reasons to choose your business." They said these ad extensions can increase click through rates by 10%.Google is starting by supporting these three ad extension types:Location extensions - highlight information about your nearby business locations for customers who want to visit your store in person.Callout extensions - promote unique offers and benefits, such as 24-hour call center service.Structured snippets - provide more specific details about your products and services using predefined headers like “Destinations” and “ Types”. For example, a rental car company might list various car classes like sedans, hybrids and SUVs.Forum discussion at G…

Google: Competition Different Across Different Country Domains

Google: Competition Different Across Different Country Domains

Google's John Mueller in a webmaster hangout earlier this month said at the 8:30 mark into the video that just because you rank well in one Google regions, it does not mean you will rank well in another. So if you rank well in Google Canada for your query, it doesn't mean you will rank as well in Google US for that query. John said the "that competition is very different across these country versions."Here is the video embed:Transcript:The biggest thing that I sometimes see in cases like this is that a site will kind of look like this in the sense that they rank in one version of Google or one country domain, therefore they should rank the same on all others or on .com, the US. And in general, that competition is very different across these country versions. So that is something where it would be completely normal where we would have very different rankings in these different country versions. So a site mi…

Why Does Google USA Returns Snippet For Warsaw Children's Dance School?

If you go to Google and search for [google usa] the first result that comes up has a title of "szkoÅ'a taÅ"ca dla dzieci Warszawa - Google." That translates to "Warsaw Children's Dance School - Google." The URL does go to Google.com but a variation of it, http://ift.tt/2v763XOIt has been like that for days.Something is weird and clearly not a priority for Google to fix. Saravanan reported the issue to Google's John Mueller days ago on Twitter with no response. It was also reported in the Google Webmaster Help forums with no response from a Googler either.I guess some SEO is messing around with Google?Forum discussion at Twitter and Google Webmaster Help.

No, Google Isn't Ranking M-Dot Domains Higher Than Responsive Sites

This is a funny one, I spotted John Mueller of Google having to tell a webmaster/SEO that Google is not giving a special ranking boost to m-dot mobile sites over responsive mobile sites or any other supported form of mobile sites. For some reason this SEO felt that after the 9/16 update that Google began ranking m-dots higher than other mobile sites.John Mueller said that is absolutely not true, saying "we're not special-casing them; sometimes they rank well, sometimes they don't."Here are the tweets:We're not special-casing them; sometimes they rank well, sometimes they don't. â" John â.o(â§â-½â¦)o.â (@JohnMu) September 27, 2017I wonder where these ideas come from? If anything, you'd think people would speculate the other way, that responsive are given a special case but no, that isn't true either. In any event, I wanted to share this fun one with you.Forum discussion at Twitt…

Google Now Serving More AMP Content In Mobile Search Results

Google Now Serving More AMP Content In Mobile Search Results

The folks over at RankRanger show in their tracker tool that AMP, accelerated mobile pages, has shown a spike in how often they show up now, compared to a few days ago, in the mobile results. It shows that in the US there was a 17% lift in AMP pages showing up in the first page of the mobile results. The increases are as follows:US: 17%Australia: 19.5%UK: 14%France: 33.5%Spain: 19.5%Japan: 18%Singapore: 21.5%I am wondering if this is at all related to Google now showing AMP URLs for featured snippets in the mobile results. Although that was much earlier this month and RankRanger told me their tools here is excluding the featured snippets. Here is the chart from RankRanger showing the increase:AMP is where it is at for now.Forum discussion at Twitter.

Now Live: Google Local Finder Website Mentions

Now Live: Google Local Finder Website Mentions

It was very revealing when Google started testing website mentions in the local finder, and now they are rolling it out. Website mentions adds to the local finder snippets if the web site has the query searched for anywhere listed on that listings web site. Like I said when they were testing it, it shows Google Local is aware of the content on the local business's web pages and may be using that for local rankings.Sergey Alakov who first spotted this also first noticed the rollout:Google seems to be rolling out the website mentions feature: https://t.co/WkIgvs8fsT cc:@rustybrick@mblumenthal — Sergey Alakov (@sergey_alakov) September 27, 2017I am able to replicate it myself here in New York:This is pretty cool, don't you think?Forum discussion at Twitter.

Google Checks For Spam Patterns Between Search Console Accounts?

Google Checks For Spam Patterns Between Search Console Accounts?

Google's John Mueller responded to a question on Twitter asking if Google will penalize the other sites in your Google Search Console account if one of those sites got a penalty. John Mueller did not say no, he said it depends. "If they're 5 random, unconnected sites and they don't show the same kinds of issues, then no," he said. Here are the tweets:If they're 5 random, unconnected sites and they don't show the same kinds of issues, then no. — John â.o(â§â-½â¦)o.â (@JohnMu) September 28, 2017It is a no brainer, like we said before, don't put all your spammy sites in one Search Console account. It makes it too easy for Google to penalize all of them.It is not a new topic, it is something we discussed in 2009 and something Matt Cutts addressed in 2014. At the same time, if the sites are not spamming, there is nothing wrong with it. The big issue is when SEOs who do penalty recovery have ton…

More Google Algorithm & Search Results Shuffling

Yea, yea, yea, more of the same. Google is updating their search results, it is in flux, search results are shuffling around. But I only try to report it when the signals all seem to be higher than the normal day to day shuffles. I always see people complaining about changes in Google but when it reaches certain levels, that is when I decide to cover it.The ongoing WebmasterWorld thread has a spike in complaints from webmasters and SEOs about ranking shuffles and the automated tracking tools also show huge changes. Here are some comments from the threads:This week was the worst week we have seen from google since panda 4. With all other updates we gained traffic but this one hit us with >50%. Sales form google organics, adwords and Shopping ads are off by 95%.We have seen the same. We've grown massively over the past few months and this week we have lost ranking from positions 2/3 to 5/6. Its impacted us dramatically.I've …

It might be Google's 19th birthday today but did you know that Google.com was registered over 20 years ago? It was registered on Monday, September 15, 1997, which was 20 years and 12 days ago. That is a while year and 12 days after the official birthday day of September 27, 1998.There has been some debate, even internally at Google, on when their official birthday is but they ended settling on today, September 27th.In terms of them registered the domain over 20 years ago? Is This The Google Shopping Ad Design For The EU?

Bloomberg reported that Google is coming out with a standalone shopping ad unit to comply with the EU regulations, so I guess it would only show in the EU regions. When Bloomberg wrote this, a bunch of EU based searchers and advertisers started to notice a new style for the Google shopping ads there. Both @stukerr and @thomasharvey_me both shared these screen shots with me that show the shopping ad units writing on them "By Google." Google Drops Sitelinks Search Box

Google Drops Sitelinks Search Box

It looks like Google has killed off the Sitelinks searchbox that launched in 2014 and has been shown for many sites in the mobile and desktop search results. The sitelinks search box showed a search box in the search results snippet for some sites that lets you search within the site, like a site command but in the Google search results.RankRanger's data shows the box has been completely removed from all of the Google results. I tested it by searching for terms like YouTube, Wikipedia, Pinterest and others, where you'd typically find the box but it is not showing up for me either.Breaking: Google has removed the Search Box SERP feature from within the organic results globally - https://t.co/zdqvU8b7ue#SEOhttp://pic.twitter.com/ydrcovoKyM — Rank Ranger (@RankRanger) September 27, 2017The developer documents still say the feature exists, which makes me wonder if this is a bug. Google AMP URLs With usqp=mq331AQCCAE= Is A Test

Some folks are noticing Google serving two flavors of their AMP URLs to users. One is your normal AMP URL and the other is the AMP URL with usqp=mq331AQCCAE= appended to the end of the URL. Google's Malte Ubl said on Twitter that this second URL is how Google triggers an experiment for more advanced transformations on the AMP cache. This specifically references the twice as fast AMP pages they are testing now.I personally see it coming up in my analytics. Here is a screen shot from later last night showing the usqp=mq331AQCCAE= added to some of the AMP URLs:Yep, this triggers an experiment for more advanced transformations on the AMP cache. — Malte Ubl (@cramforce) September 26, 2017Yep. Poll: Do You Request & Get Log Files For Your SEO Jobs?

There is an interesting conversation on Twitter around SEOs asking and obtaining access log files from their clients. It seems like many SEOs do prefer to have access to the raw log files from the site but many are unable to obtain it.I wanted to open it up to way more SEOs than just those who see that Twitter thread.
